Whangarei has become the first city in New Zealand to register their commitment to becoming a Child and Youth Friendly City – as promoted by the international movement of Child Friendly Cities around the world. This is a long-term project that will shape the philosophy and priorities of the city to ensure that children are front and centre in the way that we do things in Whangarei.
What is a Child Friendly City?
- A local body commitment to bring to life the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child ( http://www.unicef.org/crc/) at a local level.
- A city in which the children and young people are valued as citizens and have their interests respected, their voices heard and their views considered—it is a city that cares for, and looks after its kids.
- Where the voices, needs, priorities and rights of children will be an integral part of public policies, programmes and decisions.
What changes can we expect to see?
- Considering children in all the decisions that are made, allowing them to have a voice in decisions that affect them, and reorienting relevant policies so that the needs of children are put first.
Who is leading this project?
- Manaia PHO has employed a coordinator Dr Terryann Clark to lead this project.
- To become a Child Friendly City requires agreement across the sectors.
- The first step of “Registration” was achieved through a collective agreement with the members of the Northland Intersectoral Forum.

Tamariki Ora Fund
Child Friendly Cities has a small fund for community groups and organisations for up to $5000 for projects in the Whangarei/Kaipara Districts. The aim is to improve the wellbeing and development of children and young people. Projects that support the strengths and aspirations of tamariki Māori, and those living in lower socio-economic communities will be prioritised. Tamariki and taitamariki must have a voice in the development and running of the project. Applications will only be accepted from organisations with legal status. Applications must be submitteded by 5 pm on Monday 16 April 2018.

How long will this process take?
- It will take a number of years before accreditation is achieved.
- Eventually the Child Friendly project will be rolled out across Northland.
