Manaia Health is pleased to be involved in the Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau project that aims to retrofit (insulate) 4000 homes over five years.
The project is funded by Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) ASB Community Trust, Northland Health, Northland PHOs, Northpower, and Top Energy.. Other groups involved within the governance group and who are supporting the project include Te Puni Kokiri, Northland Housing Forum, Tai Tokerau MAPO Trust, and the Ministry of Social Development.
The project is delivered by a partnership of Moerewa-based He Iwi Kotahi Tatou Trust and Kaitaia based Community Business and Environment Centre (CBEC) and provides full-time employment for 15 people. In the July 2009-June 2010 period 887 houses were retrofitted throughout Tai Tokerau, of these 284 were in the Whangarei District.
The retrofitting package includes: ground cover, under floor sealing, draught stopping of doors and windows, insulating of ceiling space, lagging of hot water pipes and cylinder, regulating hot water temperatures and installing of smoke detectors. The project is mainly aimed at low-income families with high health needs, who own their own home.

The work of Tai Tokerau Healthy Housing is supported by research undertaken by the Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences He Kainga Oranga Housing and Health Research Programme. This research showed that insulating homes provides the following health and social benefits (Howden-Chapman et al, 2007):
- Significantly warmer and drier indoor living environments
- Improved self rated physical and psychological health
- Fewer days off school and work for respiratory-related illness
- Reduced hospital admissions for respiratory conditions
- Reduced GP visits for respiratory conditions
