B4SC is part of a public health strategy which aims to improve the health of all New Zealanders and reduce inequalities in health.

From September 2008 all northland 4yr olds who turn 4 after June 1st 2008 will be offered a comprehensive health check. The 45-60 minute consultation with a registered nurse will offer parents/caregivers an opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have.

The B4SC will include weight and height assessment, dental health assessment, promotion of vaccinations, and a vision and hearing screen. Questionnaires will be utilized to screen for developmental and behavioural strengths and difficulties.

The aim of the check is to identify and refer any concerns onto appropriate services for further assessment and diagnosis. It is anticipated that most children will not require further assessment. The B4SC is free to all New Zealand 4 y olds. Families will be contacted and invited to attend an appointment near where they live.
